UNSA Clarifies Its Stand: Not Linked to Sauti ya Vijana or Political Pressure Groups (2025)

UNSA Distance from Youth Pressure Groups: A Statement of Clarity and Non-Partisanism | ChimpReports

The Uganda National Students' Association (UNSA) has issued a clear statement distancing itself from emerging youth pressure groups, including the Sauti ya Vijana, emphasizing its non-partisan nature and student-founded status.

In a press conference on November 27, 2025, UNSA President Wilson Mugazhu addressed the public, clarifying the association's position and dispelling rumors circulating on social media.

Mugazhu emphasized that UNSA is a student-led initiative, created to nurture transformative leadership and represent the interests of learners. He stated, 'Our focus is on advocating for fair, education-based policies on behalf of students, and we are strictly non-partisan.'

The leadership urged students and the public to be cautious of groups attempting to associate themselves with UNSA for influence or political gain. They cautioned against being misled by such groups, emphasizing that UNSA is a student movement, not a political entity.

UNSA affirmed its intact and functional structures, from classroom leaders to national representatives, and warned against illegitimate parallel structures or pressure groups claiming control over the association.

Mugazhu stated, 'We are a student-founded and student-led organization, mandated to represent learners' voices on academic and welfare matters. All students in registered institutions are automatically members by law.'

The association also confirmed preparations for the 36th Annual General Meeting (AGM), scheduled for December 15-19, 2025, at Seeta University. The AGM will bring together 1,500 student leaders, including district delegates and secretariat staff.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the Patron of UNSA, is expected to attend as the Guest of Honour, alongside the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports. Mugazhu reminded everyone that UNSA is non-partisan, stating, 'We are a student movement, not a political one.'

UNSA also highlighted its collaboration with recognized bodies like the National Youth Council and the Patriotism Secretariat, sharing similar objectives.

The leadership emphasized the importance of integrity and student interests, addressing concerns such as surcharges imposed by universities and late fees, and welcoming the inclusion of the graduates' fund in the NRM manifesto to address youth unemployment.

UNSA Speaker Emmanuel Edunu revealed that elections for the National Executive Committee will be held at the end of the council meeting, with a transition to new leaders. The AGM program will be published and shared on various platforms for members' awareness.

The association also reminded District Coordinators to follow proper procedures, ensuring parental and school consent and full school uniform for all students traveling. The final register of delegates and nominations will be released on December 1, 2025.
