TikTok's Bold Move: Users Gain Control Over AI Content! But is it Enough?
In a groundbreaking step, TikTok is empowering users to take charge of their feeds by allowing them to reduce the influx of AI-generated content. This move comes as a response to the platform's staggering revelation: over 1 billion AI videos are hosted on TikTok, with new AI video tools like Sora and Veo 3 fueling an AI content explosion.
But here's where it gets controversial: The Guardian's investigation uncovered that nearly 10% of YouTube's fastest-growing channels exclusively showcase AI-generated videos, often categorized as 'AI slop'—a term for the low-quality, mass-produced, and sometimes bizarre content. This raises concerns about the impact of AI on content quality and user experience.
"We understand that some users appreciate AI-created content, from digital art to educational explainers," said Jade Nester, TikTok's European policy director. "But we want to respect individual preferences by letting users decide how much AI content they engage with."
TikTok's platform now boasts 1.3 billion AI-labeled videos, a small fraction of the over 100 million daily uploads. Users can customize their feed by adjusting the 'manage topic' setting, specifically targeting AI-generated content, current affairs, fashion, beauty, or dance.
TikTok's guidelines mandate creators to label realistic AI content, prohibiting harmful deepfakes of public figures or crisis events. Unlabeled AI content can be removed under community policies. Additionally, the app will watermark AI-made content, either created with its tools or identified by the C2PA initiative, to ensure transparency.
TikTok is also investing $2 million in an AI literacy fund, partnering with organizations like Girls Who Code to educate users on responsible AI usage. This initiative aims to foster a more informed community.
However, TikTok's moderation practices have sparked debate. With plans to lay off hundreds of UK content moderators, the platform emphasizes the role of AI in reducing human exposure to distressing content.
