PBBM Visits Typhoon Tino-Hit Negros Occidental, Promises Support (2025)

Negros Occidental: A Community United in the Face of Tragedy

In the aftermath of Typhoon Tino's devastating impact on the province of Negros Occidental, a glimmer of hope emerged with the visit of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his administration's support. This story is a testament to the power of unity and the resilience of a community facing adversity.

Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the President's visit, which brought much-needed attention and assistance to the affected areas. The President's sincerity and dedication to helping the province were evident, accompanied by key Cabinet officials who joined him on his assessment tour.

But here's where it gets controversial: some might argue that the government's response should have been faster and more efficient. However, the presence of the President and his team on the ground demonstrated a commitment to addressing the issues and providing support.

The municipalities of Moises Padilla and La Castellana bore the brunt of the typhoon's fury, with other areas like Hinigaran, Binalbagan, Isabela, and La Carlota City also suffering significant damage. Governor Lacson emphasized that while Negros Occidental was reeling from the tragedy, the support from the national government offered a ray of hope, proving that they were not alone in their struggle.

"Their help and concern give us strength as we try to get back on our feet. We are deeply grateful for this show of genuine concern and national support," Lacson said, highlighting the impact of the President's visit and the assistance provided.

Data from the provincial government paints a stark picture: over 800,000 individuals from more than 230,000 families across at least 17 local government units were affected. The damage to infrastructure and agriculture is estimated to be over PHP1.85 million, with thousands of houses either partially or totally destroyed.

The national government's swift response included an initial PHP95 million in assistance, distributed to the provincial government and the six worst-affected LGUs. This aid package is a significant step towards recovery, but it also raises questions about the long-term support needed for such a large-scale disaster.

La Castellana Mayor Añejo Nicor expressed his gratitude for the President's visit, which brought much-needed attention to the town's plight. The opportunity to showcase their situation directly to the President was a morale booster for the affected residents, especially those who lost their homes.

La Castellana, which is also reeling from the effects of the Kanlaon Volcano eruption, reported over 10,000 damaged or destroyed houses and PHP184.6 million in agricultural losses. Mayor Nicor emphasized the urgency of national government intervention, as the municipality's response capacity was overwhelmed.

This story is a reminder of the importance of community and support in times of crisis. While the road to recovery may be long, the presence of the President and the national government's assistance offer a glimmer of hope for the people of Negros Occidental.
